Journalist injured, security guard killed in gun attack in Northern Afghanistan

Pul-e-Khumri: Unknown gunmen opened fire on the Afghanistan Journalists Center's representative and head of Tanwir TV in Northern Baghlan province on Thursday, injuring him and killed his security guard.

The incident took place Pul-e-Khumri, provincial capital of Baghlan province when unidentified gunmen opened fire on Shir Mohammad Jahesh vehicle around 6:40pm local time. He was on his way to his home from the office when he was attacked.

A local official told the Afghanistan Journalists Center (AFJC) that Amanullah Haghyar, the security guard died of injuries at the scene of the attack and Mr. Jahesh suffered slightly two gunshot wounds to the stomach and the face.

“Mr. Jahesh has received two bullets but the doctors told me that he is out of danger,” the official added

No militant group has so far accepted responsibility for the attack.

Meanwhile, the Afghanistan Journalists Center executive director Ahmad Quraishi condemned the attack  and expressed sorrow at the incident.

“The government must immediately launch an investigation into the assault to identify the suspects and take swift action against those responsible.” Mr.Quraishi added

It comes five months after death a horrific suicide bombing in Kabul that killed dozens including four local media workers.According to figures from the Afghanistan Journalists Center, 73 journalists and media workers killed in Afghanistan since 1994 and the killers - with the exception of four cases - continue to enjoy impunity.
