The BBC Afghan Service broadcasts in Pashto and Dari for audiences in Afghanistan and Pakistan on television, radio and online as well as interactive services. We are the quality news, current affairs and information channel of choice to the Pashto and Dari speaking regions.
We are now recruiting a Journalist for the Pashto radio team, based in Kabul.
Closing Date: 30 November 2020
Reporting to the Assistant Editor for Pashto Radio, you will work as part of a team of radio Journalists. You'll originate and produce a wide variety of news and current affairs content for radio. You'll be able to think of new and creative treatments for digital and social platforms, that can also work for radio and TV. You'll be able to write quickly, clearly and engagingly and sub-edit or rework scripts that can be used by all members of the team. You'll need to be aware of social trends and audience needs and be able to make informed decisions on upcoming stories based on them. You'll also need to have excellent knowledge of audience needs in Afghanistan.
The Ideal Candidate
You'll need significant recent experience as a Journalist, with a good knowledge of radio production techniques. A full command and up to date knowledge of spoken and written modern standard Pashto (as first or equivalent language) is essential. You'll also need complete comprehension of written and spoken English and the ability to communicate effectively and translate from English to broadcast standard Pashto. You'll need to demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the aims, objectives and standards of BBC World Service and Global News as well as an understanding of the BBC’s distinctive news agenda and a wider interest in the strategy of the BBC as a whole.
